and that he would not be called upon to suffer imprisonment for the crime of which the jury declared him guilty. Ex-Judge Russell, who defended the Flack conspirators, suggested that there was another and more cogent reason for the resignation than tbe lack of defense to charges. The sheriff, be said, has been tne oojeci 01 persistant attack on the part of press and people, ana so long as ue reiuu position be would retuiin a shining mark and a target tor continued aiiac. If ho resigned and retired Into private life there would be less excuse for the continuance of the attacks, he said, and Flack was only too glad to take that course if it would relieve him only iu a slight measure from them. The sheriff's letterof resignation evidences tbe fact tbnt be was actuated by this desire to escape the fusillade of advene publio criticism, for in it he says, "I have been most inhumanly and cruelly persecuted by sensational and partisan newspapers" Another story of tbe causes leading to tne resignation is to th effect that pressure was brought to bear by Tammany Hall to get Flack to tender bis resignation, cue mat ne would not agree to it until he was assured that it would be accepted and tbe charge before tbe governor would not be brought to trial.

Under Sheriff Sexton will act as sheriff until Governor Hill appoints a successor to Flack for the interim to Jan. 1, isai. So the End Is Not Yet. Brooklyn. N.

Bartholomew, the murderer now In tbe Easton jail, and who will be bung there on Wednesday, April 9th, is an odd character in more ways than one, and bis actions during tbs few days of life which yet remain to him will be watched with not a little Interest Yssterday morning Rev. His reverend visitor informed the war-dan of Bartholomew' desire, and" as ths doomed man Insisted very strongly, his request was granted.

What followed, is thus described by a reporter of the Free Press: On going out Into the yard, where the in strument of death is erected, Bartholomew took a look at it aud then remarked that "it would be a good thing to kill hogs on." Tb sun was shining brightly at the time, and to avoid the rays from partially blinding him, be moved into better position, and shaded bis syes with his hands. In this manner he walked around the gallows Inspecting it Finally he asked to see it work. The trap was sprung aud despite the rough manner in which be spoke of the gallows and his bravado, the warden noticed that his face flushed. After looking at the structure carefully, he explained how the apparatus could be used for the killing of hogs. He said; "You could drive them on tbe platform, put one on tbe trap at a time, 1th a rope around bis neck, and then let him drop, Underneath you could hav a barrel of hot water, and after be was scalded you could haul him up again aud dress bim."
